Problem:
Large music platforms have millions of bands and artists, with most of the attention going to famous artists which makes it difficult for new and upcoming artists to be seen or heard through the app algorithm.

Solution:
Design the GeoJam app, which allows listeners to easily find and support smaller bands and musicians in their local communities - this in turn helps listeners discover music, helps smaller artists, and strengthen communities.

Competitor SWOT

To better understand our market and discover opportunities, an analysis was conducted on both direct and indirect competitors:

bandsintown, Facebook, Spotify, Ticketmaster.

We ultimately found that none of the competitors prioritized the user's local music scene - beyond available concerts in the area.

User Research

Hypothesis

Individuals encounter obstacles when discovering and supporting their local music scene.

Goals

To understand how individuals discover and support their local music artists and related shows/events.

Method

4 Participants were interviewed with a structured script

Notes were taken and analyzed

Interview Findings

  • Participants discover music from different media sources and friends

  • People like to attend events with friends

  • People tend to listen to the artist before their concert

  • Participants wanted more notifications and updates on artists/events

Define

User Persona

  • Struggles to find local artists’ music and shows

  • Believes other apps don’t prioritize discovery

  • Wants more updates on his favorite artists

User Journey

We started to ideate opportunities for our design and how they meld with a user’s life

We prioritized:

  1. Location of users

  1. Discovery of artists and shows

  1. Updates and notifications

Ideation

I Like

Basic app features were ideated:
such as Discographies and
Genres

I Wish

Distinct features for GeoJam:
New Release page and Daily
Recommendations

What If

Lofty ideas to perhaps
implement later: Shared playlists
with friends and Meet-and-Greets

Prioritization Matrix

Narrowed ideation to 3 key features:

  1. Event and Artist Profiles

  1. Explore and Search

  1. Updates and Notification

Then prioritized specific ideas

Prototyping

Userflow

We wanted our userflow to have a narrative:

User searches app

Selects an event by genre

Discovers an artist in the process

Follows for updates

Low-Fidelity

Search Page

Location

  1. Maps

  2. Radius Search

  3. Location categories

Artist support

  1. Music

  2. Shows

  3. Merch

Event Page

Community

  1. Follow

  2. Save

  3. Share

Usability Testing

Tasks

Task 1: Search for an Indie concert event

Task 2: Select a Phoebe Bridgers concert and purchase tickets

Task 3: Follow the music artist and look at your Updates

Results

Task 1: 100% Success

Task 2: 100% Success

Task 3: 75% Success

  • Reason: Design not optimized for different screen sizes

Insights

  • Refine our design for better spacing, legibility, and accessibility

  • Refine the aesthetics to be more pleasing - perhaps cater to iOS Design

Further Design Plans

  • Further build out the Share and Community aspects of the app to reinforce outreach and support to local acts

  • Flesh out the Map feature to create a more well-rounded Discovery experience for users

  • Refine the aesthetics to optimize usability and desirability

Reflection

  • Organization and time management are the key to elevating the quality of output

  • Scope Creep is a menace and honing in on a few ideas is better than overloading with many undeveloped ideas

  • Research and iteration are the lifeblood of a quality user experience

  • Teamwork makes the dream work
